Asheri
Fort / Asheri is a fort located 102 km from Mumbai and 88 km from Thane. It is
in Palghar district, of Maharashtra. This fort is an important fort in Palghar
district. The fort is located on the hills near Mendhavan Khind on
Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. The base village Khodkona is a very small tribal
village. The Fort restoration is done by the local villagers.
Asherigad
Fort - 1680 feet high this fort is in Giridurg. This fort of Palghar in Thane
district is considered to be of medium to trekers.There are many small forts in
the Palghar region, among them Asharigad is considered to be 'Dada'. The shape
is huge and this fort looks strong.
History
This fort was built by the Bhojraja of Shilahara dynasty.
This fort was captured by Bimb Raja of Mahim (Palghar)from Kolis.This fort is
about 800years old.It was ruled by Gujrat Sultanate. The Portuguese captain of
Bassein, Antonio Moniz Barreto annexed the Asherigad in 1556, after bribing the
Abyssinian captain who commanded the fort. The Manor Fort was captured later.
This fort was the northern boundary of Portuguese territory.Portuguese mad it
as a capital of 38 villages and 6 Parishes. The fort had twenty water cisterns
and two ponds. In 1737 this fort was conquered by the Maratha forces led by
Chimaji Appa against Provincia do Norte, but it was reconquered in the
counter-offensive by Antonio Cardim de Frois, the new General of the North. In
February 1739 it fell definitely into the Maratha hands. In 1818 Captain
Dickinson captured this fort and thus it went into the hands of British.
It is mentioned that the Ashrīgār was built by
Shilaharavanshya Bhojraj. It is estimated that the life of this fort is usually
800 years. Later the Portuguese captured this fort and rebuilt it. The Peshwa
won the fort in Konkan, at the Konkan in 1737, and after 1818, he went to the
British.
GETTING THERE

ST (State Transport) buses and trains are available all over from Pune and
Mumbai Mainly
There is
only one way for those on the fort. ST from Palghar to Kasasa A bus from the
bus or on the highway goes by 'Mastan Naka' from about 10-11 kms. Khodkona
village on the top of the village stops. The actual village is just a little
away from the highway. There is a bullock cart on the left side of the road to
go to the village.Being rusty is the right way to climb through the experience
of the experienced person. Possibly wear luggage on your back. Stairs are
excavated in the woods to get upstairs or to rise right upstairs. While leaving
this route, five small water cisterns are digging a little below the left hand.
One of these cisterns is potable. Once again, with a straight line, another
one-hour waits left for 5 minutes. There are three more water-cisterns when she
goes down. These tanks are very beautiful. There is also a cave in the rock
nearby.
ENTRY FEES
There
is no entry fee to visit the fort, only ID is needed.
Places to visit on the Asheri Fort
- · On the plateau many chauthareas are found.
- · There are two Jawanshi trees that the villagers think of worshiping sometime here and are not usually seen in the mouth of the cave.
- · On the top of the cave there is a square structure of pavement.
- · There is also a partially submerged gun in this pond.
- · There are two more semi-constructed ponds besides this.
- · If you look at the direction from the upper plateau, the cohojgad is clear.
- · The telescope can also be easily observed by its self-made human statues. In this direction, a big dam has been seen in the direction of the bridge and a damaged bastion.
OPENING/ CLOSING TIMINGS AND DAYS
The
fort is open 24 Hrs to general public for all days of the week. One has to show
their ID to enter the fort and for foreign nationals, passport is mandatory. It
comes under Maharashtra tourism and department also promotes the heritage site.
This fort is a must visit place if you are going on a Maharashtra tour.
