Fort is situated in the Devgad taluka in Sindhudurg district in the state of
Maharshtra. It is one of the best places to visit for holidays and adventure,
this place is one of the famous tourist attractions that come under Maharashtra
Tourism.
Devgad Fort is a
tourist spot that offers people an amazing view. The fort is situated just at
the confluence of Arabian Sea and Devgad Creek which gives a timeless view of
the sea. The place is well known for the magical and mystical sunset that can
be witnessed from the fort. The breathtaking view of the harbor is perfect for
sightseeing. Surrounded by nature, this fort is name after the place Devgad
which is famous worldwide for the production of Alphonso mangoes. One can see
nature at its best with many scintillating scenes around the place.
The fort was
destructed by the attacks from other rulers but was later reconstructed and
given life by Maratha Chief Kanoji Angre. The beauty of the fort enthralls the
tourists and the panoramic view of the area is impossible to ignore. The scenic
beauty of the area is the reason behind the ramparts and the elegantly designed
walls. In the initial days it was used as a surveillance point because of the
strategic location.
Even the British
tried to attack the fort to which they succeeded as well. Since the fort is
surrounded by water from all side, so it is also nicknamed “Janjire Devgad”. In
Arabic, Janzira means island. There is a Ganesha Temple inside the fort to
which tourists are attracted. There are three cannons and a lighthouse present
which adds to the popularity of the fort. It is a perfect place to take a
retreat from the hefty schedule and get in touch with the nature. Not only
this, the mango plantation which is done around the fort is also loved by many.
HISTORY OF THE ATTRACTION
The
fort was built by a Marathi Naval Officer named Dattajivraj Angre in the year
1729 to keep a vigil. After many years of construction and changing number of
workers, finally this 120 acres fortress was built. The lighthouse present in
the Devgad fort was built in the year 1915 for the harbour and the beach. 45
minutes from Devgad there is another fort named Vijaydurg which was constructed
by Raja Bhola II is a national monument. It is now maintained by the
Maharashtra tourism department.

Devgad
Fort is easily accessible through roads and local buses are also available. One
can also take their private vehicle to visit the fort.

There
is no entry fee needed to visit the fort.

fort is open throughout the day and every day of the week while the lighthouse
is open to public from 04:00PM to 05:00PM.

The
best time to visit the fort is during sunsets as it gives an enticing view to
the tourists. Also during mango seasons also it is suitable to visit the fort.
