Tikona (Marathi: तिकोना) also known as Vitandgad is the dominant hill fort in Maval in western India. It is located near Kamshet around 60 km from Pune. The village nearest to the fort is called Tikona-Peth. The 3500 ft high hill is pyramidal in shape and the name Tikona means "triangular".
The fort is a trekking destination noted for
the large doors, the temple of 'Trimbakeshwar Mahadev', a water tanks (seven
water tanks) and some Satvahan caves. Trek organisers also commend the views of
Pawna dam and the nearby forts of Tung, Lohagad and Visapur. There is Pawana
lake at the summit.
History
Like many other forts in Maharashtra Tikona fort has a long history.
The fort was under Nizamshah dominance till Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort
in 1657 along with the other major forts including Mahuli, Lohagad and karnala
but later in 1665 the fort was surrendered to Moghuls as per the Treaty of
Purandar. Maratha's recaptured the fort with in 5 years . Till 1818 Tikona was
under Maratha kingdom. But in 1818
British empire captured this fort from Marathas by fighting a small
battle.

ST (State Transport) buses available to Lonavala all over from Pune and Mumbai

Peth is the base village of the fort.
Kamshet is the nearest Railway station from
this fort. Kamshet is around 20 kms from Tikona.
You can also get some private vehicles from
Kamshet railway station and Lonavla railway station as well.
ENTRY FEES
There
is no entry fee to visit the fort, only ID is needed.
Places to visit on the Tikona Fort
· Small caves carved beside the door
· A huge "Hanuman" sculpture carved in a single rock.
· A big water cistern and caves can be seen.
· The Mahadev temple The Shivling of this temple is made up of
"Shaligram" which is a unique stone.
· Behind the Mahadev temple, there
is a big water pond.
OPENING/ CLOSING TIMINGS AND DAYS
The
fort is open 24 Hrs to general public for all days of the week. One has to show
their ID to enter the fort and for foreign nationals, passport is mandatory. It
comes under Maharashtra tourism and department also promotes the heritage site.
This fort is a must visit place if you are going on a Maharashtra tour.
