This fort is 2500 feet high, in the Giridurg fort. This
fort of Igatpuri-West Dongarange in Nashik district is considered to be of
medium to trekers.
Sahyadri Range, which is located in Igatpuri area, is
divided into two directions. The Sahyadri range, which is east to the east and
east to the west, is called Kalsubai Range. In these forts Kalsubai, Alang,
Kulang, Avand-Patta, the forts of the west are Tringalwadi, Kawanai, Harihar,
Bramhagiri and Anjanary. Igatpuri or Ghoti should be available to explore this
area.
History
It is said that the fort was
built by Moghuls. It was ceded to Peshvas by Nizam under the terms of the
treaty held after the Battle of Udgir (1760).This fort along with Tringalwadi
and fifteen other forts were captured by British army under leadership of Col.
Briggs.
GETTING THERE
Maharashtra
ST (State Transport) buses and trains are available all over from Pune and
Mumbai Mainly
via Kawani: If you
want to go to Kawani, then Igatpuri or Ghoti should be there. From there, catch
a bus near the cannon village. Kawanai village is situated at the foothills of
the fort. Grab a bus to Igatpuri from Upper Vaitarna and get down on the
walkie's dock. Leave the road leading to the Vatarna and keep it on the right.
After 1 hour walk from this dirt, we reach Kawani village. There is an ashram
named after Kapiladhara in the village. After entering the village, the fort is
seen on the right hand. A trunk of the fort has landed in the village. After
climbing from this sand, the door turns right at the half an hour's walk and
ends with the sparrows. The next uphill is from spinning. Here, we get to the
fort door by making easy rathing. It takes about an hour to reach the village
from here.
ENTRY FEES
There
is no entry fee to visit the fort, only ID is needed.
Places to visit on the Kavanai fort
- · After entering through the door, there is a cave on the right hand.
- · After reaching the fort, there is a lake in the South Division.
- · The bastion in the western part of the fort.
- · The water tank near the bastion.
- · Half an hour is enough for the fort to rotate.
- · From the fort you can see
o Kalsubai range,
o Trimbak range,
o Tringalwadi.
OPENING/ CLOSING TIMINGS AND DAYS
The
fort is open 24 Hrs to general public for all days of the week. One has to show
their ID to enter the fort and for foreign nationals, passport is mandatory. It
comes under Maharashtra tourism and department also promotes the heritage site.
This fort is a must visit place if you are going on a Maharashtra tour.

Accomodation on Kavanai fort
There is a cave to accommodate 4 to 5 people. We have to make a
living arrangement myself. It takes half an hour from Kawani village to go to
the castle.

Food arrangements can be made from the locals.
Water Facility on Kavanai fort
There is a drinking water tank on the fort. It has water till
April.
