This fort is in Giridurga type. This fort in Konkan hill district of Ratnagiri district.Just 2-3 km from Ratnagiri city Rathnadurga above has been the main attraction for tourists. Because of the beautiful Bhagwati temple on it, Ratnadurga is very close to the city of Ratnagiri due to its spectacular view of the sea and the subway to the sea, which is built on the hill of Arabian Sea. The size of the fort is like a riverbed and the area is 120 acres. Ratnadurga is surrounded by the sea on all sides and has land on the southeast side. At the foot of the fort, Mirakarwada is a port.

History

 

This fort was built during the Bahamani period. In 1670 Shivaji Maharaj won the fort from the hands of Adil Shah of Bijapur. King Shivaji Maharaj had built protecting towers on two commanding points, one at the south and the other near the old court house. The Citadel defense was improved by Kanhoji Angre in 1750-1755. Dhondu Bhaskar Pratinidhi did some minor repairs to the fort during Peshwa regime (1755-1818). The Fort was later won by the British in 1818.The temple of Bhagavati was renovated in 1950.

 

GETTING THERE


Maharashtra ST (State Transport) buses and trains are available to ratnagiri all over from Pune and Mumbai Mainly

There is a road leading up to the fort, and at the foot of the fort, there is the Shree Bhageshwar temple of Lord Shankara. On the pillars of this temple, beautiful pictures of beautiful animals are carved, and there is a garden with coconut, spikes and flowers surrounded by the temple.

There is no entry fee to visit the fort, only ID is needed.

  • ·       Goddess Darshan of Goddess Bhagwati,
  • ·       A place covered with walls on four sides in one place. That's the three-way subway. Today, though this subway is not in use, a huge cave in the place where the end of this ghost is situated on the coast,
  • ·       Thea bastion of a sea view, The bastion is named Reed Burj,
  • ·       The lighthouse and this beautiful house of Ratnagiri and the entire sea is visible from the lighthouse.
  • ·       There is a small pond and a deep hole in the fort.





OPENING/ CLOSING TIMINGS AND DAYS


The fort is open 24 Hrs to general public for all days of the week. One has to show their ID to enter the fort and for foreign nationals, passport is mandatory. It comes under Maharashtra tourism and department also promotes the heritage site. This fort is a must visit place if you are going on a Maharashtra tour.
