Kamalgad (literally lotus fort), also called Bhelanja or Kattalgad (literally death fort) is a square hill fort in Wai Taluka in Maharashtra, India.This fort of 4200 feet is situated in Giridurg Fort. This fort in Mahabaleshwar Dongarange of Satara district is considered to be of medium to trekers.


The historic mountains of Mahabaleshwar have embraced many historical castes as arrogant. There seems to be a mountain ranges from the rear of the dharma retention reservoir. This unique water bottle has come up in the mountains surrounded by water. A delightful fort is situated on the south side of the river Krishnaanadi and in the middle of the Wakki river basin.



History


The builder of the fort is unknown.During Maratha times, Kamalgad, Pandavgad and other forts in the area were administered by a mokasaddar (manager) from Bijapur. Early documents written in now defunct Modi script of the Marathi language refer to the fort as 'Kattalgad'.A detailed study of these documents is underway. In April 1818, Kamalgad surrendered after resistance to a British detachment commanded by a Major Thatcher. Under the British, it was used to execute prisoners of war.




GETTING THERE


Maharashtra ST (State Transport) buses and trains are available all over from Pune and Mumbai Mainly
The nearest town is Bhor or Wai which is easily reachable from Pune. The base village of the fort is Tupewadi which is 30 km from Wai and 79 km from Bhor. It takes about 2 hours to reach the machi.The route is well covered with trees. The hill route ends upon an open land called Kamal machi.On the machi there is dense forest of Jambhul and Pisa trees. After reaching the machi the path takes a left turn to reach the lone villager's hut. The lone villager on the machi can make arrangements for night stay and food at very reasonable cost. The balekilla can be reached from Machi within 20mins.Balekilla is a scarp rising 30-40feet above the forest covered area.

There is no entry fee to visit the fort, only ID is needed.

Places to visit on the Kamalgad fort


  • ·       A mountain range joining the fort attracts attention called the Navaratri hill.
  • ·       The stairs to come, It seems that you are going to the stomach of the mountain when these 50-55 steps are going down.

  • ·       When reaching the bottom, there is a deep clerk across the street, and the wet red soil of the gray or the rooftop of Kiev appears on the south.

  • ·       The bastion has some kind of construction on it.

  • ·       There is no water tank anywhere on the fort.

  • ·       On the south side, the remains of the four stone remains visible in the mud.

  • ·       Kanjalgad to the southwest,

  • ·       Raireshwar plateau in the back

  • ·       Panchagani on the west,

  • ·       Dharam Dhan on the east, received the fame Swarik Kamalgad.

  • ·       The Hemadpanthi Shiva temple of Dhoom

  • ·       Thor saint poet Vaman Pandit is also close to Bhomgaon Samadhi.


OPENING/ CLOSING TIMINGS AND DAYS


The fort is open 24 Hrs to general public for all days of the week. One has to show their ID to enter the fort and for foreign nationals, passport is mandatory. It comes under Maharashtra tourism and department also promotes the heritage site. This fort is a must visit place if you are going on a Maharashtra tour.

There is no facility to stay on the fort. The Gorakhnath Temple on Machi can remain in the house of five to six. There is no lodging facility on the fort. It takes about two and a half hours to get to the fort.

There is no water facility on the fort. There is a small straw next to the temple of Goraknath.
