This fort is about 3000 feet high and it is of Giridurga type. This fort of Satara-Phaltan mountain range in Satara district is considered as easy for trekkers. There is a fort on the left side of Sitabai hill where the Mananganga river originates, it is named Warugad. The fort is situated on the northeast of Dahiwadi in Maan taluka, on 20 miles.



 History

 

The fort is believed to have been built by Shivaji to resist the Moghals whose attacks he must have dreaded from the plain below. The Karkhanis or Superintendent of the fort was a Prabhu. The fort garrison consisted of 200 Ramoshis, Mahars, and other hereditary Gadkaris besides sepoys. It was surrendered in 1818 to Vitthal Pant Phadnis of the Raja of Satara left in charge of the town. He detached 200 men to take possession, being part of a force then raised to protect the town from the enterprizes of Bajirav's garrisons then in the neighbourhood.



 

GETTING THERE


Maharashtra ST (State Transport) buses available to village of Pitha all over from Pune and Mumbai Mainly

The fort is situated on the northeast of Dahiwadi in Maan taluka, on 20 miles.



ENTRY FEES


There is no entry fee to visit the fort, only ID is needed.

·       There were 5 doors earlier. However, there is only two left in the current situation.

·       The temple of Bhairoba on Machi.

·       The citadel


·       Look at the hills of

o   Sitabai

o   Mahadev

o   Dongarang

·       From Santoshgad, a walk from Sitabai hills comes to Varugad.

 

OPENING/ CLOSING TIMINGS AND DAYS

The fort is open 24 Hrs to general public for all days of the week. One has to show their ID to enter the fort and for foreign nationals, passport is mandatory. It comes under Maharashtra tourism and department also promotes the heritage site. This fort is a must visit place if you are going on a Maharashtra tour.

Any time you can visit Varugad fort.
The best time to visit Varugad is during the rainy season with extra care.



Accomodation on Varugad fort

The cottage near the temple can accommodate up to 25 people. The temple premises can also be used which can accommodate around 40 people or more comfortably.


There is also a roof sheltered structure built behind the temple which can used with the permission of the locals.

Food arrangements can be made from the locals.
