Fort Mangad is a survey fort which is
situated in Borwadi, an area near Mashidwadi in Mangaon, a taluka in Raigad
district in the Indian state of Maharashtra.
The fort is made sacred by the footsteps of
the founder of Hindavi Swaraj, the famous Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji
Maharaja. Mangaon is situated about 150 km from Mumbai.
History
The fort
is believed to be built to keep watch on Dive ghat along the Pune-Saswad route.
The fort was built during the period of 1757 to 1760. The fort was built by
Bhivrao Yashvant and Krishnaji Madhavrao Panse, a Peshwa Sardar, who was the
chief in charge of Tofkhana of the Peshwas. Citations of a visit of Elder
Madhavrao Peshwe to the fort are available in historic documents. A palace, belonging
to Panse, can be seen in the Sonori village though much of it is in ruins.

There
is no entry fee to visit the fort, only ID is needed.
Places to visit on the Mangad Fort
· To the
south of this fort there is Jore valley.
· To the
east there is a Konkan Diva.
· To the
south west there is a village Gangawali, which is the birthplace of
Chhattrapati Shahu.
· The fort
is 235 meters above sea level.
· At the
base of fort there is an old layout temple of the goddess Vinzai.
· From the
east side there is an entrance to the temple in the cow mouth type tradition.
· Near the
entrance of the temple there is a carved scripture of a fish and lotus.
· The idol
of Goddess Vinzai is on the fort
· On the
left side there are four water tanks (wells)
· A cave
which can accommodate about 50 persons.
· On this
fort there are remnants of irregular’s soldiery, a big house of
"Killedars" (किल्लेदार - in charge of fort) deputed by the king to
rule and protect the whole area.
· To the
south end fort, there is an open ground, where there has been military training
OPENING/ CLOSING TIMINGS AND DAYS
The
fort is open 24 Hrs to general public for all days of the week. One has to show
their ID to enter the fort and for foreign nationals, passport is mandatory. It
comes under Maharashtra tourism and department also promotes the heritage site.
This fort is a must visit place if you are going on a Maharashtra tour.
