Vairatgad fort - This fort of 3340 feet high

Vairatgad Fort (Wai T; 17° 50' N, 73° 50' E; RS. Wathar, 21 m;) in Wai
3,939 feet above sea level, lies nine miles north-east of Medha and six miles south-east of Wai, on a spur of the main Sahyadri range which branches nearly due east for about twenty miles from Malcolm Peth by Panchgani.

History
King Bhoj of the Shilahar Dynasty built
Vairatgad in the 11th century. During King Shivaji's reign the fort was used as
a military station. King Shivaji conquered the Wai region and included
Vairatgad and Pandavgad in his kingdom. The British captured it in 1818.
During Marathas
went to the north side of Pune in October of 1682 to go on a raid. Shahabuddin
was in Chakan in the first week of December. After the Marathas knew that the
Marathas came to the castle, they reached there. 60 people were killed in the
encounter there. From there, Marathe understood that it had come to the fort of
Visapur, reached there till reaching there, Marathe reached Kusapur village.
The Marathas and the Mughals were playing Shivshivli in 1682. On 4 March 1818,
General Prother Lohgad came to win. He won the Visapur first. On the second day
Marathas left Lohgad on the day of Visapur taken by Visapur.

There
is no entry fee to visit the fort, only ID is needed.
Places to visit on the Vairatgad Fort
· There are five to six tanks on the lower side of Fort.
· A small cave.
· The temple of Lord Maruti(Hanuman).
· Around the fourth quarter, the fourth floor is visible.
· Fort walls are still visible and Strong.
· The Sadar on the fort.
· The mansion near him.
· There is a vague writing on the rock.
OPENING/ CLOSING TIMINGS AND DAYS
The
fort is open 24 Hrs to general public for all days of the week. One has to show
their ID to enter the fort and for foreign nationals, passport is mandatory. It
comes under Maharashtra tourism and department also promotes the heritage site.
This fort is a must visit place if you are going on a Maharashtra tour.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The best time to visit Vairatgad is during the rainy season with
extra care.
For people who like camping, winter is ideal.
